Dubai: Atlantis and Lukie at the pool

Lukie started his water adverntures at Atlantis with the diaper on. Diaper, soaked in water, expanded to about 5x normal size (which I suppose is what they are there for) and eventually exploded into little pieces when we changed Lukie (luckily away from the pool). Once free from his diaper, Lukie caught a ride with […]

The main lobby of the Atlantis has a glass sculpture that is at least 30 feet tall by Dale Chihuly (coincidentally the same artist who did the two chandaliers at the Armand Hammer United College of the American West (see here). The acquarium at the Dubai Atlantis is aparently the second largest in the world […]

William, Jack and David showed Lukie how to build sandcastles on the palm. The largest castle we built was in Inca ‘Human Sactifice’-style (as Jack called it) The first castle was done in Arabian Fortress style, complete with the Smoot Crab & Shell family crest and a UAE flag. It also had its own cooling […]

Both mornings and sunsets were just amazing on the palm. Here’s lukie chowing down on his usual feast of eggs, shrimp, strawberries, pb&j sandwiches … With William and David’s help we also set some LEGO boats afloat in the pool. All while Lukie chowed down oblivious to the rest of the world …

Kristin loves cooking and put together something special every night. With William, Jack and David always willing to help, setting the table was a breeze … here’s what dinner looked like every night (neighbors and friends from work always seemed to drop by). Jack, not William, set the lights around the pool. There is a […]

Downtown Dubai now has the Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, the Address and Lukie in a very very stylish outfit. The horse sculpture by downtown Burj Dubai/Khalifa is by colombian artist Fernando Botero and weighs 1.5 tonnes. From a cafe on the terrace in the mall there is yet another great view of the Burj. Lukie […]

Dubai: Mall complete with skating rink and waterfalls

Thumbnail image for Dubai: Mall complete with skating rink and waterfalls

As hardcore Rosa Mexicano fans (see our Center-of-the-World pilgrimage), we had a hard time believeing that Rosa actually copied the idea from Dubai (see here for the Rosa slightly more modest US-style installation) — not to mention the fact that Rosa Mexicano’s successful chain of downtown upscale restaurants probably pre-dates Dubai with at least 2,000 […]

Dubai: Mall complete with acquarium

Thumbnail image for Dubai: Mall complete with acquarium

With 10 million litres of water, this one is bigger than your average home variety tank. Since he is such a good swimmer, we did throw Lukie into the tank later on but no footage of that unfortunately since fishing him back up and filming at the same time proved too difficult.

Any trip to Dubai must include a visit to Dubai Creek they say so we took a trip along the creek in an ‘abra’ (water taxi). Extremely cheap and a good way to cross from one side to the other, although we rented one to go up and down the river, just the three of […]
